The Games History
Paralympian Eve Rimmer (holder of 32 medals; represented New Zealand at 4 Paralympics 1968 - 1980) organised a sports event in 1990, to encourage sporting achievement for disabled people, and to celebrate New Zealand's sesquicentennial. This was a very successful event, and the memory of it was the impetus for the first Eve Rimmer Games in 2000. The Games aim to be a fun event for the participants, their families, caregivers and the community.
The games are intended for participants with disabilities and include events such as Boccia (an indoor game similar to Pentanque, but with leather balls), Wheelchair road racing, Wheelchair basketball, Snooker, Equestrian and Bowls (indoor and outdoor). There are classification categories which even the playing field and create meaningful aims for the participants.
The Games are hosted in Eve's home town of Whakatane and are held every two years. For 2010, the games will be held between 19th and 21st of March. The Games are organised by a committee of community members, with support from the local community, Disabilities Resource Centre Trust, SPARC, Sport Bay of Plenty and sponsors.
